The St. Mary’s Gaels start their season against Nevada in the friendly confines of the McKeon Gym on Friday, November 11. The #17 Gaels were tabbed in WCC preseason coaching polls to finish second in the West Coast Conference behind the #14 Gonzaga Bulldogs, but the Gaels have all the firepower they need to give Gonzaga a run for its money in the conference tournament and beyond.
After finishing the 2015-2016 season with a program best 29 wins and the West Coast Conference title, the Gaels have caught the attention of the college basketball world. St. Mary’s has been known for head coach Randy Bennett’s Australian recruiting pipeline that brought Matthew Dellavedova to the Cleveland Cavaliers, and two of the veteran key contributors on this year’s team include two Aussies who know how to score. With all of this success, the Gaels are enjoying a preseason poll ranking for the first time in program history. With that kind of pressure comes big expectations for the small liberal arts college nestled in the Moraga hills.
Nevada finished in second place in the Mountain West Conference after the 2015-2016 season behind 1st place San Diego State. They notched a 24-14 overall record for the season and went on to win the College Basketball Invitational tournament. The Wolfpack is coming off a victory against San Francisco State in their exhibition game last week.
