The Prairie View A&M Panthers take on the #17 Saint Mary’s Gaels on Wednesday. The Gaels are coming off of an 81-63 rout against the Nevada Wolf Pack in their season opener. That win allowed the Gaels to maintain their #17 spot in the national polls.
Saint Mary’s captured their 15th season opener victory on Friday in front of a packed crowd at McKeon Pavilion. Junior center Jock Landale had a career game, notching 33 points with 9 rebounds. The 6-11 Landale is yet another member of Saint Mary’s Australian recruiting pipeline. Senior guard Joe Rahon had 11 points with 6 boards and 8 assists. The Gaels were on fire, shooting 60% from the floor compared to Nevada’s 46.8%. The Gaels jumped out front early and never gave up the lead for the duration of the game.
The Panthers faced Oregon State in its season opener and ended up on the wrong side of a 78-58 final score. Senior guard Daquan Cook is the one to watch in the matchup against Saint Mary’s; his 14 points came in 35 minutes of play against the Beavers. Prairie View A&M’s head coach, Byron Smith, is in his first year after moving up from the assistant position earlier this year.
Saint Mary’s is currently leading the nation in assist-to-turnovers with 3.50 and will be taking their first road trip to Dayton on Saturday to take on the Flyers (1-0).
