The Kansas Jayhawks stun the Texas Longhorns in overtime 24-21 on a Matthew Wyman field goal. Can Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong survive this bad loss?

The unthinkable happened in Lawrence, Kansas on Saturday night. The awful 1-9 Kansas Jayhawks football team defeated the Texas Longhorns in overtime to improve to 2-9 on the season.

This was Kansas’ first Big 12 win of the season. Kansas sank Texas on a Matthew Wyman field goal essentially set up by a Shane Buechele interception. How does Texas head coach Charlie Strong survive a loss this horrendous?

Strong had been on the hot seat all season long in his third year on the job in Texas. He had never finished better than 7-6 in his first two seasons in Austin.

This was Texas’ sixth loss of the season, falling to 5-6 on the year. To even make a bowl, the Longhorns have to beat a solid TCU Horned Frogs team. Not sure that happens after this soul-crushing gut punch by the Jayhawks in Lawrence on Saturday evening.

Things were maybe getting better in Austin for the Longhorns this season, with wins over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Baylor Bears. Now we know that the Fighting Irish are awful and the Bears have imploded since falling in Austin to the Longhorns.

Texas boosters have been not so quietly pushing for the Texas athletic department to pull the plug on the Strong experiment, in favor of prying Houston Cougars head coach Tom Herman away from the AAC power in Harris County.

Some wanted to give Strong more time to turn this thing around, but losing on the road to Kansas unravels any sort of good vibes to be had about the state of Longhorns football. It’s not working and Texas needs to get a new coach for 2017. Awful football coaches don’t lose to the Jayhawks. Strong did just that in Week 12.
