The Kansas City Chiefs blew a fourth quarter lead on Sunday night, only to come back and win the game in Denver in overtime, 30-27.

In a thrilling AFC West matchup, the Kansas City Chiefs needed overtime to defeat the Denver Broncos on the road on Sunday Night Football. The Chiefs led the game 16-10 heading into the final frame, before allowing two touchdown passes to Trevor Siemian. However, the team scored with 0:12 seconds left in the fourth, and then converted a two-point conversion to send the game into overtime.

Kansas City scored the only points of the first half via their defense and special teams, as a safety kicked off the scoring. On the ensuing kickoff, the Chiefs got an incredible return by Hill, who has become quite a playmaker for them. Heading into the half with a 9-0 lead, the Chiefs had to feel good about the way their defense was playing.

Denver also had to be happy with their defense, which only allowed punts during the first two quarters. Getting Aqib Talb back energized a defense that hounded Alex Smith all game long. It took the Broncos offense until 7:37 left in the third quarter before they put any points on the board. That touchdown pass from Trevor Siemian to Jordan Taylor was the first of three second-half TD tosses for the first-year starter.

After a Hill rush gave the Chiefs a 16-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter, the Broncos reeled off 14 straight,  thanks to Siemian TD passes to Emmanuel Sanders and Bernie Fowler. They would hold a 24-16 lead until the Smith to Hill TD with 12 seconds left. The two teams would head to overtime, in just another chapter of their incredible rivalry.

Both teams exchanged field goals in the extra frame, as the score was 27-27 with 4:19 left in overtime when the Broncos got the ball for the second time. Kansas City was able to force them to attempt a 62-yard field goal, which would have been the longest OT field goal in NFL history. However, Brandon McManus missed wide left, giving the Chiefs the ball on the Broncos’ side of the 50.

Smith hit Hill for a nice gainer over the middle, before connecting with tight end Travis Kelce for 16 yards down to the Broncos’ 16-yard line. That would set up what should have been an easy field goal for Cairo Santos, who bounced it off the upright for the game-winning kick. The Chiefs won in Denver for the second straight season, beating the Broncos, 30-27.

Highlights

3 Stars

1. Tyreek Hill

Quite a historic performance by Tyreek Hill on Sunday night, as he joined some illustrious company with his breakout performance in front of a national audience. The speedy wideout became the first player since Gale Sayers back in 1965 to rush, catch, and return a touchdown in a single game, etching his name in the history books. Filling in for the injured Jeremy Maclin, Hill proved the Chiefs may have more weapons on offense than people think.

Hill’s first touchdown came via a return, as he took the ensuing kickoff from the team’s safety 86 yards for the team’s first touchdown of the game. He would score on a three-yard run with a little under a minute left in the third quarter, before hauling what would be the game-tying touchdown pass with under a minute left in regulation. Quite a game for the rookie fifth-round pick from West Alabama.

2. Trevor Siemian

Siemian proved he has some guts in him on Sunday night, as he led his team back from a late deficit to send the game into overtime. Heading into the fourth quarter down six, Siemian threw two fourth quarter touchdown passes, giving his team an eight-point lead late in the final frame. In total, Siemian threw for 368 yards in the game, connecting on three touchdowns against zero interceptions.

His development has been steady in 2016, as he was surprisingly named the team’s starter coming out of training camp. On Sunday, he looked like a veteran during the team’s comeback in the fourth quarter, but he was unable to lead the team to the game-winning drive in overtime. If he plays the way he did Sunday night, the Broncos are going to be in good shape going forward.

3. Travis Kelce

Big-time players make big-time plays in big-time games, and Travis Kelce is definitely a big-time player. The big tight end made some huge plays throughout the team’s overtime victory on Sunday night, but none was bigger than his 16-yard drive late in overtime. It was the defining play that brought the Chiefs into field goal range, where they eventually won the game.

For the contest, Kelce caught eight balls for a team-leading 102 receiving yards. Though he failed to find the end zone, he played a big part in nearly every big drive for the Chiefs, as he once again did battle with Super Bowl MVP linebacker Von Miller. He should now be considered an upper-echelon tight end going forward.
