MLB Free Agency 2017: 5 potential teams for Pedro Alvarez
2. New York Yankees – American League East
Pedro Alvarez could very well end up playing in the Big Apple wearing pinstripes. The New York Yankees are in a weird state of rebuilding but also maintaining a competitive team. They sold off many of their aging assets in 2016 and even dealt Brian McCann this offseason but are still looking to add players this winter to keep them in the hunt in the AL East.
The Yankees also seem to be trying to avoid opening the vaults and spending a ton of money. They have reworked their organization and are relying on their talented youth like star catcher Gary Sanchez and first baseman Greg Bird for the 2017 season. However, when they did sell off a few players, they created holes that need to be filled.
Pedro Alvarez can join the Yankees and be quite the addition. With Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira and Brian McCann all gone, Alvarez can be added as a veteran power bat at a cheap price. He’d serve as a DH in place of those three while the Yankees play their young potential stars in the field. Alvarez would also give them the left-handed power they lost with McCann and Tex no longer being a part of the team.
With the short right-field porch at Yankee stadium, Alvarez would surely see a lot of success. His power translates to all stadiums but Yankee stadium has a tendency to give left handed batters an easier time. And compared to cheap, available options like Matt Holliday, Pedro Alvarez would be smarter knowing that fact.
As the New York Yankees continue to shed payroll from past signings, Pedro Alvarez becomes a smart option. His veteran presence would be a welcomed addition to a team that is putting on a youth movement in the AL East. Also, he will be cheap and not bog down a franchise that is looking more towards the future than now and he will also give them the power they have lost since last season. Signing him would be a smart move for the Yankees of 2017 and beyond.
