Oregon football has officially fired head coach Mark Helfrich after a poor 4-8 season in Eugene.

It was a rough season for Oregon football and head coach Mark Helfrich, who took over for Chip Kelly when he left three years ago. However, the administration wasn’t very forgiving after a 4-8 season, letting Helfrich go on Tuesday, officially.

The school released a statement regarding the situation, stating that Oregon football was “getting new direction.”

Helfrich had this to say, according to the release:

"“It is a great honor to have served as the head football coach at the University of Oregon,” Helfrich said. “It is with respect and disappointment that we receive this decision. Plain and simple — we didn’t win enough games this season.“Thank you first to my wife, Megan, and our family, the fans, the campus community, the board, our donors and administration. To our coaches, staff and their families, it is impossible to communicate my gratitude for the environment we got to work in every single day.“Finally, to the players — thank you, and I love you. The future is bright for this young, talented team, and we will be supporting them and their new leadership.”"

It’s a tough situation for the university to move on from a guy who put up 11 and 13 wins in his first two seasons with the Ducks. However, many feel that he did so because of the recruits being Chip Kelly’s still.

Helfrich will find a job elsewhere since he does have a decent offensive mind, but he doesn’t yet have what it takes to lead a major college program.

The Ducks were 9-4 last season and then regressed to 4-8, and he finished 37-16 as the head coach of Oregon. Not many coaches will survive a season like Helfrich just had unless they have a track record of greatness.

Oregon will begin the coaching search immediately and don’t expect the Ducks to settle.
