Cleveland Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith had the most delightfully unsurprising response to giving up a lay-up while he was dapping up Jason Terry.

The Cleveland Cavaliers were playing the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night and things did not go as expected for the former. Milwaukee came out and took it to the defending NBA champs for a double-digit victory. However, the highlight (or lowlight) of the night came from the ineffable J.R. Smith. Always in peak form, he took his aura to another ethereal plane during the loss.

During the game, Smith saw Bucks veteran guard Jason Terry on the sideline. Excited by seeing The Jet, Smith went over to dap up his compadre. In doing so, the Cavs guard also completely abandoned his defensive duties on Tony Snell and thus allowed a wide-open lay-up.

However, as indescribably “J.R. Smith” as that play was, his response after the game may have been even more so. As you’d expect, he was questioned about the defensive lapse. But of course, Smith either had no recollection of the play or, as he says at the end of the below clip, he didn’t even know he was in the game:

I don’t know what we as a human race or as basketball fans did to deserve J.R. Smith, but we should count our blessings. This man is a national treasure that cannot be taken for granted. He committed a woeful defensive error and justified it by saying he didn’t know he was in the game—that’s both legendary and par for the course for the Cavaliers guard.

Of course, Smith’s antics and hilarity are always a beat easier to swallow (for Cavaliers fans at least) whenever they come in or after a win. That wasn’t the case on Tuesday night. But if you ask him about what he could’ve done differently to help his team win, he might just say that he thought he was a DNP for the matchup.
