Houston’s head coach search will not include former Baylor head man, Art Briles.

Before his controversial coaching tenure at Baylor, Art Briles led the Houston Cougars for five seasons. He most notably led them to a 10-4 record in 2006, wich resulted in a loss at the Liberty Bowl. A 34-28 record would be compiled while at the school.

Well, now that Houston needs a new head coach, Briles’ name has been brought up. He has been in and out of headlines for Baylor’s sexual assault scandal but hasn’t drawn much interest. There had been an earlier report of the Cougars looking to interview him, but according to a school statement, that’s not the case. It’s noted that the 61-year-old expressed interest in interviewing for the job, and the University of Houston leadership discussed the potential of this happening. However, they decided that he would not be part of the list of people they talk to about being the next head coach.

It’s noted that the 61-year-old expressed interest in interviewing for the job, and the University of Houston leadership discussed the potential of this happening. However, the president and athletic director decided he would not be part of the list of people they talk to about being the next head coach.

Given the media attention that’s still being given to Baylor, schools may not want to bring on a coach that may be a distraction. We’re not even close to one year past Briles being let go either, so more time may be needed before he gets another head coach job, if ever,

The job that Briles wanted had been Tom Herman’s, who had two successful years with Houston. He recently took the same position with the Texas Longhorns, who fired Charlie Strong after three sub-.500 seasons. Herman led to the Cougars to a top 10 spot in the AP Poll earlier this season, including beating No. 3 Oklahoma in the opening week.

Now, Briles will continue to see if anyone shows interest in him. So far, that hasn’t been the case and may continue to be so if Baylor remains in the spotlight for the wrong reasons.

Lane Kiffin and Les Miles remain the two most prominent names connected to the Houston vacancy.
