The Alabama Crimson Tide block Florida Gators’ Johnny Townsend’s punt and Alabama’s Joshua Jacobs would take it to the house for a 27-yard touchdown.

Blocked kicks quickly became a thing in the first quarter of the 2016 SEC Championship Game between the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide and the No. 15 Florida Gators.

Up 10-7, Alabama’s Derrick Gore was able to block Florida’s Johnny Townsend’s punt. Gore’s Alabama teammate Joshua Jacobs would come down with the blocked punt and took it to the house for a 27-yard return touchdown.

Alabama struggled to do much of anything on offense in the first quarter against the stout Florida defense. However, a pair of defense/special teams touchdowns gave Alabama a 16-9 lead in the first frame.

Interestingly on the very next play from scrimmage, Alabama kicker Adam Griffith would have his PAT blocked by Florida and a returned for two points by David Reese. In the early part of this SEC Championship Game, the defense and special teams for both teams have been the biggest story.

Both of these teams meeting in Atlanta are defense-first football teams. Florida needs to win on defense to have a chance to beat Alabama. The Crimson Tide have been able to make plays on offense this season with well-designed plays by offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin.

Alabama has a thing going on its defense this season called the Six Club. A Crimson Tide player gets to join the Six Club and be in possession of The Belt if he can get Alabama points either on offense or special teams. Since this was Jacobs’ first return touchdown of the season, he is now a member of the Alabama Six Club.
