Michigan fell to number six in the College Football Playoff despite beating the Big Ten champions 49-10, and fans weren’t happy.

For the first 10 weeks, Michigan looked like one of the best teams in the country. They were steamrolling opponents with ease, and tried to send a strong message to Ohio State. Then they lost to Iowa and everything unraveled for them. The only way they could make the Big Ten Championship Game was if they beat Ohio State. They lost a tightly contested game, and during Conference Championship Week, all they could do was watch.

But fans still believed they belonged in the Playoff, if only because they felt they’re one of the four best teams in the country. They also thought that Ohio State got in because they’re a brand name, so the Wolverines deserves it too, especially after their Air Jordan deal.

When the rankings were revealed, the Wolverines fell below Penn State to number six, and people in Ann Arbor didn’t quite care for it:

Not only does dropping to sixth take the Wolverines out of the Playoff, they won’t be playing in the Rose Bowl any more either. Instead, they will take on Florida State in the Orange Bowl.

Nobody’s denying the talent of Harbaugh’s squad, or the quality of their wins. However, it’s hard to see how a two-loss team that didn’t even play in their conference championship game should even have a shot at the Playoff. And while everyone points to that head-to-head win over Penn State, they played a Nittany Lions team that fielded fifth-string linebackers.

The Wolverine’s best hope of making the Playoff was if chaos ensued during Championship week. But since every team that was expected to win did, they remained on the outside looking in. The best thing Jim Harbaugh can do is to channel this anger towards the Seminoles instead of continuing to mope about a fourth-and-one.
