Bryce Petty talked to reporters about being named the starter for the rest of the season.

It’s official. We’re at the point of the NFL season where teams who are out of contention take the “let’s see what we’ve got” approach. That’s exactly what the New York Jets will be doing by starting Bryce Petty for the remainder of the year.

Petty talked to reporters on Wednesday about the opportunity he’s been and said this is an awesome opportunity. It’s an awesome opportunity for the former Baylor quarterback but it’s also the right move for the struggling Jets.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, needless to say, has been dreadful. Fitzpatrick has a combined 45.2 quarterback rating on the season. He may have played so terribly that you have seen the last of him in the NFL as a starter.

It’s no given that Petty is the franchise quarterback the team has lacked since Chad Pennington, the team also has Christian Hackenberg who they took in the second round of the 2016 draft. Regardless, Petty, a fourth rounder in 2015, will be given the first crack. He’s been thrust into action three separate times this year posting average numbers outside of Monday’s game against the Colts. He did make one nice throw, however:

Sometimes all it takes is one sign of life. Whatever Petty brings to the table, it can’t be much worse than the quarterback play the Jets have seen all year long. It’s important to remember that we’re talking about a guy that posted an impressive 62:10 touchdown to interception ratio at Baylor.

At 3-9, quarterback play isn’t the only problem the team has. They’ve dealt with the declining play of former All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis, a major injury to Eric Decker and questionable coaching. The team has said that Hackenberg will dress for the last four weeks but won’t play unless Petty gets hurt. It sounds like Hackenberg is a big more of a project than the team bargained for.

Seeing what they’ve got in Petty is the right move. If he doesn’t show signs of life the Jets might think of giving Tony Romo a ring this offseason.
