The No. 12 Saint Mary’s Gaels welcome the University of Texas-Arlington Mavericks in a first time match up in the friendly confines of McKeon Pavilion. Saint Mary’s is enjoying a trip up the polls, landing at No. 12 this week in the Associated Press Poll. This marks the highest ranking for the school since they landed at No. 13 back in 1958.
The Gaels just won the Battle of the Bay in their big win over Stanford on November 30. They struggled in the first half but managed to hold the Cardinal to 27.6 percent shooting in the second half to rally to a 66-51 win. Big man Jock Landale is still hot, averaging 19.7 points and 9 rebounds per game in the first six games of the season.
The Mavericks have battled back from a rough 1-3 start to the season to win six in a row. UT-Arlington is riding high after taking down Texas 72-61 on November 29, netting their first win against the Longhorns in program history.
Most recently the Anteaters took down UT Dallas in a 99-49 barnburner. The team is averaging 77.8 points per game and 6.7 steals. Senior forward Kevin Hervey is averaging 13.4 points per game and senior transfer Jalen Jones is scoring 13.8 points per game with an average of 3.7 rebounds. They were picked to finish first in the Sun Belt Conference and are making their mark in the conference with their impressive six-game streak. Hervey was the Sun Belt’s preseason pick for Sun Belt Conference player of the year.
