Kansas forward Carlton Bragg was arrested Thursday night on suspicion of domestic battery.

Kansas Jayhawks’ sophomore Carlton Bragg was arrested by Lawrence, Kansas police Thursday night on suspicion of domestic battery, according to a morning report from the Kansas City Star.

Bragg, a former five-star recruit and McDonald’s All-American, will now await a decision from the Douglas County prosecutors office regarding whether or not he will be charged per the Star’s report.

“We are still trying to gather information,” head coach Bill Self said. “But it is a charge which we take very seriously.”

Associate athletic director Jim Marchiony offered a similar response, “We are aware of the situation and in the process of gathering information and once we have the facts we will act accordingly.”

This won’t be Self’s first time dealing with a player arrested on battery charges. In December 2010, then senior Mario Little was arrested after an altercation with his girlfriend. He was suspended indefinitely by the program and missed six games before returning to action after receiving diversion for the offense.

Bragg’s arrest comes amidst lingering questions about his play in Kansas’ frontcourt. The sophomore is averaging 7.8 points and 5.3 rebounds in 16.0 minutes per game, but was expected to be a more significant contributor in the absence of long-time stalwart Perry Ellis.

Instead, the Jayhawks have shifted focus by playing smaller lineups to take advantage of their backcourt depth with Bragg starting the past four games on the bench behind either Lagerald Vick or Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk. From a basketball perspective, it’s good news for Kansas that the team already has experience playing without Bragg on the floor.

Questions will now shift to what happens next including whether Bragg will be charged and/or suspended by the team. The Jayhawks have three non-conference games remaining before opening Big 12 play on the road at TCU. If Little’s suspension is any guide, it seems like that Kansas will be without the power forward for a significant number of games.
