If Hull appear doomed, then it’s because they probably are. After a shockingly good start to the season (seven points from their first three games), things have gone almost exclusively downhill for the Tigers. The team itself isn’t completely terrible — there is, at least, Premier League experience, while Robert Snodgrass is good enough to play for a top half side. But that’s about as far as it goes. The Tigers can’t defend. They can’t really attack. They can’t do much of anything. Mike Phelan has huge job on his hands to save Hull from the drop, a job that might be possible only with significant spending in January, something the behavior of the ownership over the past six months doesn’t suggest is likely.

Things until recently hadn’t been going much better for Crystal Palace, who had lost six games in a row until last weekend, when they ran out 3-0 winners against Southampton at home, and in the process may have saved Alan Pardew’s job. Palace certainly do have quality in their squad, but have been drifting for most of the calendar year. It’s probably not time for them to worry too much about relegation yet, but if Pardew can’t establish greater consistency, he’s likely to find himself under serious pressure again very soon.
