What’s one thing that Texas Southern has in common with No. 11 Louisville? The fact that both teams had Southern Illinois as their most recent opponent. That’s where the similarities end. Louisville came out with a big 74-51 win over Southern Illinois on Wednesday while Southern Texas faced off at Southern Illinois last Saturday and lost 74-70.

The Texas Southern Tigers are on a three game skid, with the losses coming from a game at Louisiana Lafayette, Arizona, and Southern Illinois. The term “road weary” doesn’t being to explain what the Tigers are feeling right now. Coach Mike Davis has 13 non conference road games on this season’s schedule and the next time the Tigers are back home will be after their 17th game of the season. Why all of the road games? They bring a hefty paycheck to help fund the department. However, they’re taking a toll on the Tigers and facing off against a Top 25 team won’t help.

On the other hand, the No. 11 Cardinals are on fire in the rankings but still have some issues to work out as they head toward conference play. Moving the ball is at the top of that list. Sophomore guard Donovan Mitchell is averaging 11.3 points per game and is the team’s leading scorer, though he hasn’t seen double digit scoring in three games. Quentin Snider is also scoring in double digits with 10.3.

Big man Anas Mahmoud is doubtful for Saturday’s game after suffering from a concussion. While the Cardinals haven’t been playing to their full potential, they’re slowly making improvements.
