Seattle Seahawks punter Jon Ryan gained over 40 yards on a fake punt, but Los Angeles Rams DB Troy Hill was waiting for him.

In recent years, the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams have dominated the Seattle Seahawks. They’ve won four of their last five meetings, including their first meeting this season. Given that the two teams have trended in completely different directions, it’s got to be frustrating.

But Jeff Fisher was seemingly the one coach who knew how to beat the Seahawks, and now that he’s gone, the Rams had no answer. The one thing the Rams were able to run fairly successfully against the Seahawks were trick plays, but this time, it was Seattle who broke one off despite leading 24-3.

Punter Jon Ryan had all the space in the world, and he exploited it for a 40-yard gain. You had to wonder why the Rams gave him that much free space, but when Troy Hill collided with him at full speed, we knew the answer:

Of course, this isn’t even the first time Jon Ryan has run a trick play. Two years ago, in the NFC Championship Game, he threw a touchdown pass off a fake field goal which sparked their memorable comeback over the Green Bay Packers.

Perhaps he did that as retaliation for Richard Sherman annihilating Jared Goff and putting him in concussion protocol. While he’s had a rough start to his career, the Rams have to be reminded of Case Keenum again.

That type of physicality has come to define this rivalry. However, with this win, the Seahawks ended the Rams’ recent dominance in it while also clinching the NFC West. After two ugly losses to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers, the Seahawks needed this win to get back their confidence back. They’ll almost certainly want to rectify their early exit from last year’s playoffs.
