College football bowl season will officially get underway when the North Carolina Central Eagles meet the Grambling State Tigers on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta.
The Celebration Bowl is an annual contest between the winners of the SWAC and MEAC conferences at the FCS level, following in the footsteps of the Heritage Bowl from the 1990s. North Carolina A&T took down Alcorn State in the first ever edition of the bowl a year ago.
Grambling State went 11-1 during the regular season, with the only defeat coming in a narrow loss to Arizona in early September. After crushing Alcorn State earlier in the year, Grambling State earned a hard-fought 27-20 win over the Braves in the SWAC Championship Game for its first conference title since 2011.
The Tigers feature an explosive offense that averaged 41.5 points per game this year. Wide receiver Chad Williams piled up 90 catches for 1,366 yards and 12 touchdowns during the regular season, while quarterback Devante Kincaid was named the SWAC Offensive Player of the Year after recording a TD:INT ratio of 28:3.
North Carolina Central enjoyed its best season ever at the FCS level with a 9-2 record and first MEAC title in program history. The Eagles have won nine straight after losing to Duke and Western Michigan to begin the year, including a 42-21 upset of No. 9 North Carolina A&T to close out the regular season.

Grambling State is a two touchdown favorite and figures to challenge the Eagles’ defense, so North Carolina Central will need a huge day from quarterback Malcolm Bell. The senior was both the leading passer and rusher for the Eagles with over 2,700 total yards and 25 touchdowns.
