San Diego State Aztecs running back Donnel Pumphrey busted a 32-yard touchdown run to give his team the lead over the Houston Cougars.

The Las Vegas Bowl is always the marquee battle on the first Saturday of bowl season every year. This year, the San Diego State Aztecs had all eyes on them and their running back as they took on the Houston Cougars. San Diego State running back Donnel Pumphrey had a chance to make history against Houston.

If Pumphrey could get just 108 yards on the ground on Saturday, he would break Ron Dayne’s FBS career rushing yards record. While Pumphrey settled for a tough 58 in the first half, he got it going in the second half and even gave his team the lead on a huge run.

As Pumphrey busted through the middle, he cut back to his right and was off to the races as the Cougars could not bring him down at all. The Aztecs crowd went nuts as he picked up 32 yards and the lead.

The Houston defense is one of the best in the nation in the run and they were really making him work for his yards for most of the day. The minute he took off, it felt as if the momentum was changing in Nevada.

Greg Ward Jr. would then throw a pick-six and the Aztecs were rolling big time over the once mighty Cougars. It takes a superstar to lead his team and get things going and that’s exactly what Pumphrey did.
