The Detroit Lions wide receiver will pay homage to the late NBA sideline reporter

Craig Sager’s impact wasn’t limited to the NBA where he worked as a sideline reporter, but the entire sports world.  Sager passed away earlier in the week at the age of 65 after a long fight with leukemia.

His fight with cancer down the very last minutes of his life has resonated with many sports fans, including Detroit Lions wide receiver Golden Tate, who will honor Sager with his custom-made cleats on Sunday.

Tate’s cleats are as flashy as the suits worn by Sager during his career as a sideline reporter for Turner Sports.

NFL players and their cleats have been a strong story throughout the season. From Antonio Brown honoring Muhammed Ali and Arnold Palmer on his cleats to the NFL allowing players to wear cleats honoring a charity of their choice in week 13, using cleats to send a message has been a trend all season.

In week 15, Tate will look to continue the trend and honor one of the more influential sports reporters of the century. Tate’s cleats will have a pattern similar to one of Sager’s old outlandish suits, where he was known to wear during his sideline interviews with coaches and players.

It is a nice sentiment, and the hope is that Tate will not be receiving a fine this week for a uniform violation. The NFL has a somewhat unclear rule on this and had allowed Brown to honor Arnold Palmer on his cleats, but told Brown he needed to take off his cleats that honored Ali just a week later. Here is hoping that Tate is able to honor someone who touched so many in the sports community without the downfall of a fine.
