San Diego State running back Donnel Pumphrey broke outside and got the yards he needed to set the FBS career rushing record on Saturday afternoon.

Throughout the history of college football, there have been several legendary running backs that have taken the game to another level. Legends that built records and left a legacy for future running backs to look up to. On Saturday, San Diego State running back Donnel Pumphrey took his place in history.

With Pumphrey needing 108 yards in the game to pass Ron Dayne and set the FBS career rushing record, the running back had the challenge of going up against the No. 3 rush defense in the nation with the Houston Cougars.

In the first half of the game, the Cougars really gave Pumphrey everything he could handle and he had to work for his yards. In the second half, Pumphrey got rolling as did the rest of the Aztecs. After the defense kept setting the offense up with great field postion, Pumphrey took his place among the greats.

Needing 11 yards, Pumphrey busted a run outside and was able to get space. He ran over a defender on the way down to pick up some extra yards and to get to 6,402 overall which is a brand new record.

To be able to run for that many yards for a career is a special feat and a reminder of just how hard he works. He isn’t the biggest running back in the game but he makes up for it with tremendous heart and a motor that never quits.

The future is bright for Pumphrey as long as he keeps putting the work in that he is. He doesn’t get the attention that the other backs in the nation do, but he will get every bit that he deserves for being the new record holder and standard bearer.

Records are made to be broken and Dayne held onto the rushing record for a while. Then a young kid from San Diego State came in and set college football on fire with his feet and a 2,000-yard season on the ground.
