5 replacements for Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith
4. Tony Romo
If the Chiefs want to look outside of organization for Alex Smith’s replacement, a very realistic option could be Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. Sure, he’ll be 37 in 2017, but if Kansas City wants to win now, he’s a great option. Romo would cost $20.835 million against the salary cap in 2017, but he could be released as early as after the 2017 season. For a win now team like the Chiefs, he makes a lot of sense.
The Cowboys will likely be willing to listen to offers for him with the success of Dak Prescott. Jerry Jones believes in his rookie quarterback, making Romo expendable. Despite the hate he gets, he’s not a terrible quarterback. Romo has his flaws, but he’s still a very good quarterback. The Cowboys quarterback would be a significant upgrade over Smith.
Romo has what it takes to take advantage of the Chiefs speedy options. Kansas City has a very solid offensive line that could give him the protection he needs with his injury history. Though if the Chiefs trade for Romo, they might want to make sure they have a competent backup like Foles. There are other quality options available, but Carrie Underwood’s least favorite quarterback will likely be the cheapest as far as what it would take to trade for him.
