The NCAA hit Baylor with multiple recruiting violations, adding to their tumultuous 2016 season.

2016 hasn’t been close to the year of the Baylor Bears in college football. After a sexual assault scandal, which is still receiving headlines months later, head coach Art Briles was removed from his head coach position. Shirts of Briles would get sold by fans during the season in support of him, further dampening the perception of the program as a whole.

Well, things have taken its latest turn for Baylor on Wednesday. According to Adam Rittenberg of ESPN, the NCAA announced recruiting violations against two assistant coaches, offensive coordinator Kendal Briles and receivers coach Tate Wallis, from the football staff. They “exceeded the number of allowed evaluations and had impermissible contact with a prospect.”

Baylor had imposed penalties on these coaches, which included being suspended for games. After letting this go through, the NCAA Division I infractions committee panel hit them with an additional $5,000 fine. It’s last noted that new head coach Matt Rhule likely won’t bring either coach back for 2017.

Rhule is further jumping into a chaotic program, which hasn’t been able to stay out of negative headlines throughout the year. This even included on the football field, where the Bears struggled mightily to close the season. Interim coach Jim Grobe led this team after Briles got fired, and seemed to have things going in a positive direction at 6-0 and a top 10 spot in the polls. However, they would go on to lose six consecutive games to finish the year at 6-6. They are set for the Motor 6 Cactus Bowl against Boise State later in December.

The issues with Baylor continue to swirl as we head into 2017. The new coaching staff will have plenty to do to reshape this football program’s image, something that may take time to successfully complete.
