Eastern Michigan vs. Old Dominion(-3.5) at Nassau, Bahamas(3):
Eastern Michigan(7-5, 4-4 MAC):
Wins: vs. Mississippi Valley State(61-14), at Charlotte(37-19), vs. Wyoming(27-24), at Bowling Green(28-25), at Ohio(27-20), at Ball State(48-41), vs. Central Michigan(62-21)
Losses: at Missouri(21-61), vs. Toledo(20-35), at Western Michigan(31-45), vs. Miami(OH)(15-28), vs. Northern Illinois(24-31)
Record vs. bowl teams: 3-3
Eastern Michigan is making their first bowl appearance since 1987 when long time NFL quarterback Charlie Batch was under center. Is QB Brogan Roback a NFL talent? That remains to be seen, but the MAC was a solid league this year, and the Eagles held their heads above water. This team doesn’t do any one thing well, but they know how to play in close games. Half of their games were decided by a touchdown or less.
Old Dominion(9-3, 7-1 Conference USA):
Wins: vs. Hampton(54-21), vs. UTSA(33-19), at Charlotte(52-17), vs. Massachusetts(36-16), at UTEP(31-21), vs. Marshall(38-14), vs. Southern Mississippi(51-35), at Florida Atlantic(42-24), vs. Florida International(42-28)
Losses: at Appalachian State(7-31), at North Carolina State(22-49), at Western Kentucky(24-59)
Record vs. bowl teams: 2-3
Taylor who? Okay, so David Washington isn’t going to make anyone forget about Taylor Heinecke just yet, but he put together a solid season for the Monarchs. The senior leader doesn’t have the pocket presence that Heinecke had last year, he still led the Monarchs to nine wins. Old Dominion has not lost a game since October 22nd.
Prediction:
Will this match up to the inaugural Popeyes Bahamas Bowl last year? That was a crazy game! One thing is for sure. Both teams are going to be very excited to be there. This is Old Dominion’s first bowl game in FBS. This is Eastern Michigan’s first bowl berth since 1987 when most of these players’ parents were young children. This is a big deal!
Both of these teams play tough. Old Dominion’s offense is better, and both teams played good defense for the bulk of the season. That said, I think the MAC was tougher than conference USA, so I have to pick based on that.
Pick: Eastern Michigan
