The #19 Saint Mary’s Gaels welcome the South Carolina State Bulldogs to McKeon Pavilion in a home game and final tune up before West Coast Conference play begins. This is the first meeting between Saint Mary’s and the South Carolina State Bulldogs.
Saint Mary’s has improved to 9-1 after beating Texas A&M Corpus Christi 67-48 at home on Tuesday night. The Gaels held the Islanders to just 18 points in the first half and 28 points in the second half. Calvin Hermanson led the team in scoring, with 19 points and 3 rebounds. Jock Landale was back in double digit scoring with 15 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double. As a team the Gaels were shooting 64.7% from the charity line and were 23-55 in field goals.
South Carolina State is currently sitting on a 3-8 record after a close 69-67 win over Furman on December 16th, snapping a three game losing streak. Tashombe Riley had a double-double and senior Eric Eaves scored 17 points, boosting his 14.9 point per game average. As a team the Bulldogs are averaging 63.7 points per game.
The Bulldogs are fairly overmatched in this contest, but they do lead the Gaels in steals per game with 5.6 compared to the Gaels’ 4.4. The Gaels need to make sure that they maintain ball control against South Carolina State; so long as they do that the Gaels should be in a good position to come away with a win.
