Landon Donovan is really trying to be the Brett Favre of MLS by playing on another team after coming out of retirement last season.

Landon Donovan took the soccer world by storm last season when he came out of retirement. He stepped on a pitch for the first time in two years, and he did so with the LA Galaxy after winning four MLS Cups together. But instead of having his 2014 win be the last memory of him, he tried and failed to ignite a title push in 2016, and it appears it’s left him wanting more.

According to ESPN’s Julie Stewart-Binks, if Donovan does return to the MLS next season, it won’t be in a Galaxy uniform:

We already know what Donovan looks like in another team’s jersey. He spent four seasons with the San Jose Earthquakes, two of which resulted in an MLS Cup. He also spent time abroad with Everton and Bayern Munich, but if you blinked, you missed it. If he does make this move, though, he won’t be doing his reputation any good.

There’s really nothing Donovan can offer at this stage in his career. He scored in his first game back, but that proved to be his only goal of the season. Opposing fans got a kick out of his comeback attempt by chanting “AARP” at him, while the Galaxy’s second-round exit prompted manager Bruce Arena to take over for the US National Team.

Teams shouldn’t be offering him anything either, unless they’re really desperate. Having Donovan will only serve as a distraction, as the media will invariably follow him around. And if he were to join a Western Conference rival in Real Salt Lake, there’s no telling what reception he’ll get in his first game against the LA Galaxy.

Whenever Landon Donovan finally decides to retire, he should be regarded as a US Soccer legend. But like Brett Favre, all of these comebacks that nobody asked for means that people won’t acknowledge him as such until years later.
