Tennessee Volunteers running back John Kelly was able to get away from a Nebraska defender and sprint 28 yards for the first touchdown of the day.

As one would come to expect, it was a struggle between the Tennessee Volunteers and Nebraska Cornhuskers to put points on the board in the Music City Bowl. Both teams were defensively all over the other team’s offense and it created for a scoreless battle after the first quarter on Friday.

In the second quarter, the Volunteers started to finally generate a little bit of offense. As Tennessee got into Nebraska territory, running back John Kelly took it upon himself to get his team on the board.

As Kelly took the hand off from Joshua Dobbs, he was able to get out on the edge and get some space. He was able to slip past the defender and from there he was off to the races, as he sprinted 28 yards for the touchdown.

Sometimes it takes just a spark play to get a team going and in a game like this one where defenses aren’t giving an inch, a big play could be all that it takes to demoralize the other team and give the scoring team life.

Kelly showed great athleticism here and elusiveness. Then after he was able to get free, his acceleration carried him the rest of the way to the score. That apparently built some momentum for Tennessee as Dobbs would find the end zone soon after to extend their lead.
