North Carolina Tar Heels starting quarterback Mitch Trubisky throws a careless pick-six to Stanford Cardinal strong safety Dallas Lloyd in the Sun Bowl.

The 2016 Hyundai Sun Bowl might end up being the final game of North Carolina Tar Heels starting quarterback Mitch Trubisky’s college career. Trubisky is a redshirt junior and could enter the 2017 NFL Draft. He could go as high as No. 1 overall to the Cleveland Browns.

Well, the usually accurate Trubisky saved his worst collegiate performance for the Sun Bowl against the Stanford Cardinal on December 30th. For his third turnover of the ball game, Trubisky slings a terrible pick-six to Stanford strong safety Dallas Lloyd.

The first interception Trubisky threw on Friday was bad. His fumble caused by the official was worse. This pick-six to Lloyd was downright ugly. Lloyd was a former high school quarterback. He baited Trubisky on this coverage.

He would jump in front of the curl route being run by T.J. Logan and take it to the house. That defensive pay dirt would give the Cardinals the 22-17 lead early in the fourth quarter. Stanford had its issues in this game, playing without star running back Christian McCaffrey and losing starting quarterback Keller Chryst to a knee injury.

While he did look good at times, Trubisky looked far too inconsistent to honestly look like the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. This Sun Bowl might force him back to school for his senior season in Chapel Hill. In the NFL, Trubisky will see vanilla coverage schemes more complex than what Stanford threw at him in the Sun Bowl.

Trubisky will have some time to make his decision about his NFL future. This third turnover tied his career worst mark. When everyone was watching, Trubisky didn’t live up to the hype. He has a bright future but may need more time in college to be an effective NFL passer.
