The Georgia Bulldogs get a big boost on offense from this impressive 33-yard touchdown reception from running back Sony Michel against the TCU Horned Frogs.

The Georgia Bulldogs’ offense was largely stagnant in the first half against the TCU Horned Frogs in the 2016 AutoZone Liberty Bowl. Georgia true freshman quarterback Jacob Eason struggled with his accuracy, but did get better in the second quarter.

Needing a big play to keep pace with TCU, Eason was able to connect with running back Sony Michel out of the Georgia backfield for an impressive 33-yard touchdown to make it 16-14 TCU after the made Rodrigo Blankenship PAT.

Michel was one of four junior players that decided to return to Athens for his senior season in 2017. He could have entered the 2017 NFL Draft after his true junior year, but may not have been anything more than a Day Three selection.

Michel’s best strength as a player is his ability to make defenders miss in open space. He is a solid runner, but an even better receiver out of the Georgia backfield in the screen game and with the occasional check down.

This score by Michel illustrates why his game will translate to the NFL level. He’ll thrive in a bubble screen league and is fearless when he has the rock in his hands. It should have only been a first down for Georgia, but Michel wanted to find pay dirt to keep Georgia in this bowl game.

Georgia had an opportunity to take a slim one-point lead at halftime, but Blankenship’s 53-yard field goal attempt was blocked by the TCU special teams. The Horned Frogs controlled this game for most of the first half, but this Michel touchdown gave Georgia a spark it would need to orchestrate a comeback in the 2016 AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
