Washington’s John Ross would try to get the offense going after Alabama scored, but ended up making a mistake.

Washington and Alabama are battling in the first of two College Football Playoff semifinal games on New Year’s Eve. This one is the Peach Bowl, played from the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA. The winner will play whoever walks out of Clemson vs. Ohio State victoriously.

To start the game, the Huskies would get a touchdown off a 16-yard pass from Jake Browning to Dante Pettis. Alabama then answered back with a score of their own to tie it up at 7-7.

Well, things would quickly go awry after Washington took back over. On the first play of the drive, Browning hit wide receiver John Ross on a five-yard pass. However, the ball would be stripped and picked up by Jonathan Allen to give possession back to the Crimson Tide and swing the momentum toward the 13.5-point favorites.

Luckily for Washington, Alabama got stopped on third and six at the Washington 24 yard line after a wide receiver rush. This set up a field goal attempt, which kicker Adam Griffith hit to give Nick Saban’s team a 10-7 lead in the first quarter.

The turnover gave Alabama plenty of momentum initially, but Washington stopping them on third down and only trailing by three may be somewhat of a win. They’ll need small victories like this throughout the Peach Bowl if they want to compete with the No. 1-ranked team.

Now, we’ll see if Washington can answer with a score of their own to get back into the game. It’s still early, but given how quickly this Alabama team can get going, the Huskies may have to score on their next drive. Will they keep it close?
