The Delaware 87ers are now the best D-League team, or at least the one best connected to the force.

The 87ers, the Philadelphia 76ers D-League affiliate, will be wearing R2-D2 jerseys at their Star Wars night, which is tonight. The jerseys will then be auctioned for charity.

Now, the jerseys themselves are kind of great. It’s a character everyone recognizes, a character that basically everyone likes and actually makes sense on a jersey. If only the other team was also wearing a “Star Wars”-themed jersey.

The move for other D-League teams now has to be to have their own “Star Wars” night and try to one-up the 87ers. Some suggestions:

  • Knights of the Old Republic night: All of the players come out dressed as Jedi, robes and all, with the coach remaining in one for the entire game. When he or she wants to call a timeout, he has the use one the replica lightsabers available at Target.
  • Han Shot First Night: Every player warms up in a “Keep Calm and Han Shot First” t-shirt and the mascot gets to drive around in a Millennium Falcon.
  • It’s a trap night: The coaching staff teaches everyone how to design a trap while dressed as Admiral Ackbar. Plus, free blue milk!
  • For the Salt Lake City Stars only: Death Star night. Every player on your team comes out in Rebel pilot gear and if you win, you play the end of Episode IV for everyone.
  • Jar Jar Binks/Gungan night: Just kidding, no one deserves this fate.

Now, the real question is this: Where Sam Hinkie still running the 76ers, what character would have suggested be featured?
