The first of two legs between Southampton and Liverpool in EFL Cup semifinal action takes place on Wednesday. It will be key for Southampton to get off to a fast start as they host Liverpool in the first round.
Wednesday’s match between the two English sides is the first EFL Cup action since the end of November. During the quarterfinals round, Liverpool defeated Leeds United, 2-0, while Southampton advanced to the semifinals after beating Arsenal, 2-0.
If Liverpool can find a goal or two on the road, then its chances of advancing to the championship game are very good as the second leg will be played at home. Yet, Liverpool should not take the away leg for granted or they could end up being Southampton’s latest victim.
Liverpool tied Plymouth in a scoreless draw on Jan. 8. The players could be fatigued heading into this game after a quick turnaround between games. Southampton also played an FA Cup match last weekend. It played a day earlier than Liverpool and are at home on Wednesday, which is beneficial.
