Although I have a particular affinity for the idea of a frontcourt split between Karl-Anthony Towns and Duke’s Harry Giles, there are other prospects that will likely fit better in Minnesota. In this case, the best talent on the board is also an excellent fit for the Timberwolves.
Florida State’s Jonathan Isaac is a 6-foot-11 combo forward who would likely slot in between Andrew Wiggins and Towns at the power forward spot, allowing the latter to play a more natural center position. Isaac’s length bodes well for his defensive potential, an area where Minnesota drastically needs help. As a freshman, he has a 5.1 percent block rate and a 2.7 percent steal rate. He’s also been a solid defensive rebounder, snagging 22.3 percent of misses when he’s been on the court.
On offense, Isaac has flashed 3-point range — another area where the Timberwolves need to improve. He is comfortable playing off the ball as he’s shown with the Seminoles, however, he should also be able to attack slower power forwards off the dribble in straight line drives towards the rim.
Overall, as a 6-foot-11 combo forward, Isaac has an intriguing set of skills that can help fill obvious holes for Minnesota.
