Devonta Smith

WR, Amite, LA

  • High School: Amite
  • Composite Rankings: No. 64 overall, No. 9 WR

Another big-time receiver that’s being heavily recruited, another race between LSU and Alabama to try and sign him; it’s a tale as old as time. Devonta Smith has the combination of skills and athleticism that seem to indicate he’ll be a sure-fire success in the college football ranks.

Boasting nice size and length at 6-1, Fields’ greatest asset is probably his speed. With a 40-time listed 4.49 seconds, he has the potential to even better that once he’s on a high-quality college strength and conditioning program. Of course, he also needs to put on weight as 160 pounds doesn’t speak well to durability out of the gate, much like is the case with Collins and his weight and frame.

However, the notion of adding a top-10 receiver recruit isn’t the only reason why Smith finds himself among the must-haves for LSU. Perhaps even more crucial is the fact that he’s an in-state product. Coming out of Amite High School in Louisiana, Smith stands as the No. 2 prospect in the state. However, the belief right now is that LSU stands behind Bama in regards of their chances to sign him.

Again, this is Orgeron’s first recruiting class as the head coach of the Tigers. He has to both make an impact by bringing in great players while also making a statement about what he’s able to do in this aspect. Being able to land the best in-state prospects is a crucial part of that. So to be able to sign Smith would be massive in that regard.
