Who is considered the top college football recruit for the 2018 class?

College football’s 2017 National Signing Day is in the books with plenty of recruits announcing where they will play for the upcoming season. Some of them had already committed in advance, which made for few five-star players announcing where they will be going. The top one turned out to be defensive tackle Marvin Wilson going to Florida State.

All eyes will be turned toward the 2018 recruits now, which won’t be finalized for another year. However, the process of bringing in future players has already begun for some teams.

Heading into the 2018 recruiting season, there are multiple players considered at the top of the rankings. 247Sports.com and Scout have quarterback Trevor Lawrence as the No. 1 recruit. He’s a pro-style signal caller out of Cartersville, GA. While Lawrence hasn’t signed a letter of intent, he committed to Clemson in December 2016.

Lawrence should be the replacement for Deshaun Watson, who is departing the Tigers for the 2017 NFL Draft. While that means next season will be a transition, the wait may be worth it for the top player of the 2018 class.

On ESPN, defensive end Xavier Thomas is considered the top recruit for 2018. Lawrence is No. 3. Thomas stands at 6-foot-2, 249 pounds and may be headed to the ACC. 247 has Clemson as the favorite to land him, which could make for a coup if they can get both the top-ranked quarterback and defensive player. South Carolina and Florida State are also in the running.

The main point of the 2018 recruiting season is still far away, but Thomas and Lawrence look to be the frontrunners to remain at the top of lists on 247, ESPN, and Scout throughout the year. Will both of them end up in Clemson by next year?
