Jarome Iginla would like to play for a contender as he wants to win a Stanley Cup before he retires.

The Colorado Avalanche came into the 2016-17 NHL season with some hope. With a fresh new coach and some minor tweaks to their lineup, some had them as a potential playoff team. However, they’re currently in last place in the league. This makes them candidates to be sellers at the trade deadline. One player they’re considering trading is forward Jarome Iginla. In his last season, he has a no trade clause. According to Iginla, he’d be willing to waive it.

“I would like to, at the deadline, go somewhere,” Iginla said, via Puck Daddy. “I would like to be in the playoffs. I would hope that there is some opportunity to go and play in the playoffs. Those are the best games, the most fun for sure, and you have a chance to win. So no, I haven’t given up on that chance to win.”

He says he hasn’t talked to Avalanche management yet, but he imagines it will happen soon. It makes no sense for Colorado to hang onto Iginla. He’s in what is likely his last season as a pro and even if he doesn’t fetch them a huge return, something is better than nothing.

The return for Iginla won’t be the biggest. In 48 games this season, he has just six goals and six assists. Unless he gets hot, Iginla won’t score at least 20 goals for the first time since the 1997-98 season. However, he could still provide forward depth for a Stanley Cup contender. Iginla made an appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals with the Calgary Flames in 2003-04, but the Flames lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
