Report: Jordan Farmar the favorite to sign with Cleveland Cavaliers

After constructing a group workout on Wednesday, the Cleveland Cavaliers may be settling on the player they will sign.

In response to LeBron James publicly calling for reinforcements, and more specifically a “playmaker” to back up backcourt mate Kyrie Irving, the Cleveland Cavaliers staged a group workout on Wednesday. Mario Chalmers, Lance Stephenson and Kirk Hinrich were the three veteran players immediately reported to be attending the session, but the rest of the group was not known.

Jordan Farmar was the fourth known addition to Wednesday’s workout, on the morning of. The 30-year-old point guard played two games for the Sacramento Kings early this season, before being waived in Nov. 7, and Cleveland.com reported Thursday morning that Farmar was “impressive” in the workout with the Cavaliers.

According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN, the Cavaliers have given Farmar assurances that if anyone is signed from Wednesday’s workout it will be him. Another reported point in Farmar’s corner is his willingness to sign a 10-day contract, as Stephenson also is, while Chalmers and Hinrich both want a guaranteed contract for the rest of the season.

Over 10 NBA seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, New Jersey Nets, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies and the Kings, Farmar has averaged 7.7 points, 2.9 assists and 1.9 rebounds per game.

It’s possible the Cavaliers don’t sign anyone from this week’s workout, as head coach Tyronn Lue insinuated on Wednesday, and simply wait for players to be bought out by other teams. But the team probably needs a healthy body or two, with J.R. Smith, Chris Anderson and Kevin Love dealing with injuries and one immediate roster spot open to make a full group of 15 players.

Farmar reportedly flew back to California to await the Cavaliers’ decision. He would be a good fit for the Cavaliers, for financial reasons as much as anything, but they may have to act quickly if another team in search of a veteran point guard shows interest.
