DeMarcus Ware thinks Broncos should stick with young quarterbacks

Free agent outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware sounded off on how the Denver Broncos should approach the potential addition of Tony Romo.

The writing was on the wall for Tony Romo when rookie Dak Prescott mounted an improbable 11-game win streak in his absence. Since then talk has been swirling about Romo’s next landing spot in the league, with the Jets, Texans, Cardinals and Broncos surfacing as real possibilities.

In a Jan. 22 appearance on NFLN’s “Gameday Morning,” free agent outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware, who just finished up a three-year contract with Denver and before that was a teammate of Romo’s in Dallas, gave his opinion on how the Broncos front office should handle the prospect of adding Romo.

“”I just think he (would) be a great fit for the Denver Broncos, but also, we already got two vested guys in Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch. So you got to think about what type of message you want to send to the team.”

Ware defended Romo and even said he would be open to reuniting with the 36-year old quarterback, “…but the thing is, I know what we have with the Denver Broncos and you gotta go with what you have. Play with what you got and just roll with it.”

Doesn’t sound like loads of confidence from a former teammate that holds Romo in high esteem. Broncos receiver Emmanuel Sanders, who was also a part of the Jan. 22 appearance on NFLN, added his two cents about Romo joining the Broncos.

“I believe I would benefit,” he said on GameDay Morning. “But one thing about it is: I’m always gonna take it back and I’m just gonna put it on (general manager) John Elway. In John Elway I trust. If he does bring him over, I think Tony Romo will fit good in (offensive coordinator Mike) McCoy’s system…I feel like we will win ballgames with Tony Romo or potentially a championship. At the same time, Paxton Lynch played in a spread offense at Memphis and he can be successful. I think Trevor (Siemian) can be successful. We’ll see what we do. I can’t sit up here and say ‘Bring Tony Romo!’ because I also have two other quarterbacks that are playing really well too.”

Next: Dan Quinn destined for greatness?

Neither player wholeheartedly backed Romo, though it’s not suprising. Outside of his impressive 2014 season Romo’s only started four games in two years since then. The lukewarm words from current Bronco Sanders and a player who talks like he’s resigning with them in Ware don’t lend much hope to the idea that Romo will be joining them next fall. That’s tough news for Tony who had Denver pegged as his top landing spot.
