Looks like those Woj bombs could be dropping from a different direction.

Think it doesn’t matter which reporter covers sports for which outlet in the second decade of the 21st century? We’re apparently about to put that thinking to the test, as NBA scoop maestro Adrian Wojnarowski could be switching homes soon.

A Deadspin report says that Wojnarowski, famous (or infamous, depending on your point of view) for his “Woj bombs” that break NBA news, is about to become an ESPN employee after 10 years helping build Yahoo’s NBA coverage into a powerhouse. It’s safe to say The Vertical would not exist without Wojnarowski.

The Deadspin piece also notes how Woj and ESPN have sparred over the years, and how he’s used his competitive nature with the Worldwide Leader as fuel to drive himself. For that reason alone, they might seem strange bedfellows, but since ESPN is so invested in covering the NBA — for which it is also a broadcast partner — trying to poach Wojnarowski only makes sense.

It sounds as if Woj’s departure could potentially gut The Vertical too, depending on which of its staffers might decide to go with him. If nothing else, “The Vertical with Woj” would need a new face as its frontman and a major rebrand.

So yes, it very well might still matter who writes where. There will still be Woj bombs, but if they are being set off from Bristol, that should be a new and different experience for NBA fans indeed.
