The San Antonio Spurs made more history Monday night after outlasting the Pacers in Indianapolis.

Often times in sports we come across players, coaches, and teams that transcend the games we adore. In the NBA, the San Antonio Spurs have become the model franchise since the start of the 21st century.

With their 110-106 victory over Indiana tonight, San Antonio won its 42nd game of the season. This means they have once again clinched a winning campaign, making it 20 consecutive seasons the organization has done so. This two decade mark just so happens to now be NBA history:

Anytime a franchise in sports is able to establish dominance like this, it is a clear sign that everyone is on the same page. This doesn’t just mean the five players who take the floor at a given time. It starts at the top with one of the league’s best executives, R.C. Buford, and of course the one and only Gregg Popovich.

Pop has built a foundation that makes it a necessity to put aside your own individual desires and buy in to the people around you. This is why year in and year out, San Antonio possesses such camaraderie within their locker room. It certainly has shown on the court as well, with five titles since this reign began. It’s death, taxes and a Spurs win at this point.

Like most dynasties, it always takes some luck to get going. San Antonio was fortunate enough to land a big man out of Wake Forest by the name of Tim Duncan. Paired with David Robinson, Duncan turned out quite all right. The rest is history.

Adding Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili along the way, the Spurs were the new force to be reckoned with in the NBA. Twenty years later, a new cast of Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge are still holding the fort down.
