The Washington Nationals could use an upgrade at catcher, and signing Matt Wieters wouldn’t be a bad gamble toward that goal.

As the 30 MLB clubs immerse themselves in the start of spring training, there are still a handful of impact free agents available, including catcher Matt Wieters. Wieters, 30, is not without suitors. According to Jayson Stark of ESPN, the Washington Nationals are interested in his services, but only in a short-term capacity

Wieters came to the major leagues in 2009 with the tag of mega-prospect, but he never became a superstar. Wieters has enjoyed a solid career, though, posting a combined 8.0 WAR over 2011 and 2012. Unfortunately, the South Carolina native needed Tommy John surgery in 2014, and after playing just 75 games in 2015, was merely average in 2016.

Last year, Wieters hit .243 with 17 home runs and a paltry .302 on-base percentage. On the wrong side of 30 years old, Wieters needs an excellent year to bolster his market to perhaps land one more sizable deal.

As for the Nationals, they are favorites to repeat in the National League East. They do have a hole at catcher after losing Wilson Ramos to the Tampa Bay Rays. With Jose Lobaton as the current starter, Wieters would be a clear upgrade provided he can stay on the field.
