Denver Broncos free agency 2017: Top 5 targets
By Brad Weiss
The Denver Broncos head into free agency with plenty of holes to fill on their roster. Here are five targets they should look at for next season.
The Denver Broncos failed to reach the playoffs in their defense of their Super Bowl 50 title, as a first-year starter got his feet wet in 2016. Trevor Siemian played very well for someone who had never started an NFL game before this season, but it was a shoddy running back situation that really hurt them on offense. The Broncos need to improve their offensive line this offseason, and the free agency period is a great place to start.
Denver has a brand new head coach in 2017, as Gary Kubiak had to retire due to health issues. Vance Joseph will be getting his first taste as the main man in charge, and hopefully for the Broncos, he can have the same impact Kubiak had in his first year at the helm. This Broncos team is not far away, and with their elite defense, there is no reason why they cannot fight for a playoff spot in 2017.
Here are five possible free agent targets for the Denver Broncos.
The Denver Broncos need help in the defensive front, and why not look to a player who already plays in the AFC West. Dontari Poe may not return to the Kansas City Chiefs due to cap reasons, and the Broncos should definitely make a play for him. Poe is a great at stuffing the run, which is an area the Broncos could use some help in for the 2017 NFL season.
Kansas City is going to try to lure Poe back, but if they cannot swing a deal, the Broncos have to at least offer him something. They have had plenty of looks at him on the other sideline and know what he can bring to the table every Sunday. Poe warrants double teams, and with the talent the Broncos have on the outside, it would enable them to put serious pressure on the quarterback next season.
Philip Rivers and Derek Carr both play in the AFC West, which means the Broncos will need to get in their face if they want to be competitive next season. Poe is excellent at pushing the pocket, and we have all seen what the Broncos defensive backs can do when they can play opportunistic. Denver is only going to go as far as their defense will take them in 2017, so bolstering the defensive line should be considered a priority.
