Denver Broncos: 5 offseason needs
By Brad Weiss
2. Improve at the running back position
When C.J. Anderson went down, so did the Broncos chances of moving the ball on the ground. Anderson tore his meniscus in October, ending a season that started out with much promise. The team failed to bring in any kind of suitable replacement, and the running back position was basically a turnstile the rest of the season. They are going to have to improve the position this offseason, and they should have plenty of opportunities to do so.
Devontae Booker filled in nicely for Anderson, but he is in no way ready to be the main man in the backfield next season. There is still no way of knowing who will be the team’s quarterback next season, so making sure they can move the ball on the ground is going to be a huge priority in 2017. If Anderson comes back healthy, he should be the one getting the bulk of the carries, but knees can turn into a long-term issue, especially for running backs.
There are a bunch of good running back options in the 2017 NFL Draft, including a handful that should be available in the later rounds. The Broncos do not have a very good offensive line, so adding a talented back from free agency may be the way to go. Players like LeGarrette Blount and DeAngelo Williams should be available for the right price, and both would be a perfect fit in the Broncos offense next season.
