Kansas City Chiefs: 5 offseason needs
By Brad Weiss
3. Decide on the future of Jamaal Charles
For a long time, Jamaal Charles has been the face of the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. A star running back, Charles has been an a franchise-type player for the team, but knee injuries have derailed his potential Hall of Fame career. The team tried to get him back on the field in 2016, but troubles with his surgically repaired knees limited him each time he tried to suit up.
In Charles’ absence, the Chiefs went with players like Spencer Ware and Charcanderick West, both of whom lack the star power a player like Charles brings to the field. However, even Charles does not know what his future will bring, so the Chiefs may want to spend a draft pick on a running back this April. The draft is loaded with players who could be available in the later rounds, including stars like D’Onta Foreman of Texas, and Donnel Pumphrey from San Diego State.
No matter what the team decides to do to replace Charles, they are going to have to find out what his status is before they can make a move. The team would like nothing more than for Charles to come back healthy for the 2017 season, but it is looking more and more like his days as a dominant back in this league are over. A lot of what the Chiefs do on offense revolves around getting major production from the running back position, and Charles just may not be able to provide that anymore.
