Earlier in the season, LeBron James told reporters that the team needed a playmaker. James didn’t get his wish right away, but his request may be fulfilled

According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, Deron Williams, who was waived by the Dallas Mavericks, is drawing interest from multiple teams. However, Williams has already made the decision to join the Cavs.

After a short stint with the Brooklyn Nets, Williams joined the Mavericks, playing 65 games while averaging 14.1 points and 5.8 assists per game last season. This season, most of the production at the guard position has gone to Seth Curry and Yogi Ferrell, leaving Williams the odd man out.

The Mavs were looking to trade Williams before the Thursday’s deadline, going unsuccessful, so the team decided just to waive him shortly afterwards.

Williams isn’t the valuable starter from his days in Utah and Brooklyn. However, with Kyrie Irving having one of his most productive seasons to date, the 32-year-old guard could add more veteran presence in coming off the bench to contribute to the defending champions.

Since point guard Matthew Dellavedova left Cleveland to join the Milwaukee Bucks this past offseason, the Cavs have struggled to find a valuable backup for Irving this season. Rookie Kay Felder, who averages 4.2 points and 1 assist per game, has the potential to be a good piece for the future, but not during the quest for a second-straight championship.

James leads the team in assists with 8.8 per game, followed by Irving with 5.9. The rest of the team averages below one assist per game. Playmaking has been a huge problem for this Cavs rotation, a role Williams could fill right away.

When James wishes something, believe the Cavs front office will answer eventually. Williams is averaging 13.1 points and 6.9 assists per game this season. Williams former team the Utah Jazz and Atlanta Hawks were also possible suitors for his services.
