4. Cornerback

The biggest question the Rams will face is their own players in free agency. That starts with Trumaine Johnson. Just last season, the Rams chose Johnson to franchise tag over Janoris Jenkins, letting Jenkins walk. Johnson was fine but was not exactly the major impact player that they wanted.

He will be expecting a big payday, though. He also should know that if it is not coming from the Rams, it will come on the open market. The Rams now are dealt with the question of potentially overpaying Johnson to keep the continuity around, or letting him walk and looking for a younger, cheaper option with more upside.

The team will retain E.J. Gaines and Lamarcus Joyner, so the back end of the depth is not going to be depleted. Nolan Carroll, Sam Shields, and Captain Munnerlyn would be some guys who would save the Rams money, but can slot in with those two and at least give a complete unit.

The Rams can use one of those veterans as a stop gap, and add a mid-round draft pick into the mix to give some life to the future aspects of the unit. Their best bet will be to re-sign Johnson, though, and it makes cornerback a big priority to hit if they do not.
