Mike Glennon: 5 best fits in NFL free agency
By John Buhler
One team that has been mentioned as a possible destination for Glennon is the Pittsburgh Steelers. While Pittsburgh already has a future Pro Football Hall of Famer at quarterback in Ben Roethlisberger, there is a great chance that Big Ben only plays a few more years in the NFL.
Pittsburgh has not appropriately addressed its long-term needs at quarterback. The Steelers can’t keep expecting that Roethlisberger is going to keep suiting up for them in perpetuity. Though the Steelers have a pair of backups in Landry Jones and Zach Mettenberger, neither have shown the ability to lead a team on NFL Sundays.
Glennon could come in and backup Roethlisberger for a year or two while he learns Todd Haley’s passing system. Though he hasn’t played very much, Glennon gives off the impression that he can process the most complicated parts of a highly nuanced offense. The Pittsburgh passing game would fall into that category.
Frankly, the chances of Glennon playing during his first year in Pittsburgh would be almost certain. It seems like an annual thing where Roethlisberger has to miss time with an injury that he will inevitably rush back from. Glennon could very well start two to four games for the 2017 Steelers all things equal if he does sign with them.
Pittsburgh doesn’t have a ton of cap space at roughly $22,594,071 to work with this offseason. The Steelers could very well use a first or second-round pick to draft Roethlisberger’s heir apparent. Not to say that Glennon will be their franchise guy, but could provide short-to-medium stability at the quarterback position to close out the decade.
