Could the San Francisco 49ers be closing in on a Kirk Cousins trade?

Ever since Colin Kaepernick fell out of favor, the San Francisco 49ers have been looking everywhere for a quarterback. It appears they’re willing to make a trade to do so. According to sources, it’s “more likely than not” that Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins will wind up being the next 49ers quarterback.

He is obviously their first choice and the best choice available for them. There aren’t any quarterbacks worth drafting with the 49ers’ second overall pick and Cousins is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Moreover, San Francisco definitely has the necessary cap space to sign him to a long-term deal, something Washington hasn’t done yet.

The 49ers have former Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan as their head coach. This could work in their favor, as Cousins likes him a lot and had success with him. Obviously, more moves would need to made along with the trade. However, the 49ers could bring in someone like Pierre Garcon or DeSean Jackson, both of whom are former teammates of Cousins.

San Francisco is willing to be bold to get what they want. It will likely cost them at least a second round pick to get him and the second overall pick could be in play as well. However, if Cousins won’t sign his franchise tag with the Redskins, they might not have much of a choice.

It’ll be a bit ironic to see Washington on the other end of a quarterback trade after they traded up to take Robert Griffin III. Now the Redskins might be stuck with no quarterbacks from a draft they originally thought they had two future quarterbacks in.
