The Ravens are taking a risk on a potentially good, but injury prone, running back

Danny Woodhead is reportedly signing with the Baltimore Ravens, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Woodhead has had a rough last few years with injuries after a pretty strong beginning to his NFL career. The longtime running back has had season-ending injuries two of his last three seasons and is signing with Baltimore after ACL surgery.

According to Rapoport he’ll be fully healthy, but that can’t rule out concerns that he’s become injury prone.

The running back position can be brutal with even the healthiest of running backs eventually breaking down. On top of this, Woodhead is 32 years old, which means he should be slowing down soon to go along with his injuries. None of this can be encouraging for Ravens fans as they watched their franchise struggle to find a suitable running back replacement last year for Justin Forsett.

Luckily, running backs seem to grow on trees these days so Baltimore should be fine as far as getting someone that can help Woodhead carry the load. If he can manage to stay healthy the entire season, and hasn’t slowed down yet, then Baltimore is picking up a solid RB1. He can catch the ball out of the backfield and has shown the ability to return kickoffs and punts in the past. More importantly, he can block extra pass rushers and give Joe Flacco a little more time to throw it deep. If everything goes the way Baltimore wants it, then this should work out.

Unfortunately, not everything works out the way it should and there’s a lot of red flags that come with a signing like this. Hopefully for Woodhead it works out. He’s one of the stereotypical hardworking NFL players and it’s nice to see guys like that succeed.
