NASCAR XFINITY Series standings after Las Vegas
By Nick Tylwalk
The standings leaving Las Vegas make it appear that three XFINITY Series drivers have set themselves apart from the pack even though only one of them has won a race.
Elliott Sadler hasn’t won an XFINITY Series race yet 2017, nor has he really threatened to visit a Winner’s Circle. Yet he still finds himself atop the standings after the Boyd Gaming 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and he really only has two close competitors at this point.
The thing is that they’re very close. Ryan Reed, the winner of the season-opening Daytona race, is only four points back. And rookie William Byron, who has been every bit as good as advertised, sits just five points behind Reed.
You have to go 18 points further back to find fourth-place Daniel Hemric. Certainly, it’s too early to think three drivers will run away from the field so early, but it does show just how important it is for the XFINITY Series drivers to pick up as many points as possible in races where the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series gang enters in big numbers.
Veterans like Brendan Gaughan and Justin Allgaier should bounce back, rookies like Byron and Hemric look like factors and drivers like Bubba Wallace could still break through. But there’s no question that the trio leading the way has helped itself a lot by starting so quickly.
