Could the Seahawks really move on from Richard Sherman?

Richard Sherman has been one of the faces of the Seahawks ever since they became contenders. His notorious behavior became noticed after stopping the 49ers on a crucial play and going on a postgame tirade about how Michael Crabtree could never score on him. He’s infamous for running his mouth, playing tough football, and once getting punched in postgame after talking some more. He’s also been one of the better corners in the NFL and has been able to back up all of the trash he talks.

So why would Seattle ever move on from him? Reportedly, if the right offer comes around the Seahawks would be open to trading Sherman if the offer was serious, according to Michael Lombardi. So obviously they won’t give him up for nothing, but if someone makes them an offer they think can help sustain themselves as contenders then they aren’t afraid to make it. As great as Sherman’s been that’s just business.

Initially it seems strange to move on from a player that’s been such a huge part of being one of the NFL’s best defenses, and is still in his prime. However, Seattle has started to slip a little ever since their two Super Bowl appearances. They’re still one of the best teams in the NFL, but they don’t look quite as invincible as they used to. Some of this has to do with talent moving on and other parts has to do with good players getting older. Seattle knows that they have to keep making moves to maintain themselves as contenders.

One of those moves could be to trade a top corner before he falls off. Sherman is 28 so he’s not going to fall off anytime soon, but when corners slip off it’s fast and hard. Like running backs, sometimes it’s better to get ahead of that drop off and find a young replacement sooner than later.
